MOVEMENT + VISUAL ART

Unpolished Movement Portraits

are a celebration of the non-artistic parts of artists’ lives. Dancers and theater-makers can become passionate about chasing dreams, forgetting to celebrate the parts of ourselves that make us who we are as individuals. The process: an impromptu prompt, recording a one-minute voice memo on the topic’s answer, then an improv to the mover’s own thoughts. No music, no choreography, no rehearsal - only the audio response informs their movement. The soundbite and the video are done in at most two takes. They are snapshots of our hearts - the humanity under the artistry.”

 SITE-SPECIFIC CHOREOGRAPHY

a movement and sound exploration, dwelling on the symbiosis and tension of coexisting halves. A collaboration between myself and Karima Walker, the work premiered Spring of 2019. The immersive performance dwelled within the oscillating architecture of “The Lung” at The Biosphere 2, a leading earth and planetary science research facility

My first choreography project under Artifact Dance Project in Spring of 2018, explores how nature takes us to the realm of the transcendental. Beckoning questions of the sacred and the secular, myself, and sound collaborator, Karima Walker, explored how nature and the nature of improv is an arsenal of sound, The soundscape was derived solely from organic sounds of my own movement exploration and Mother Nature bent to make breathing the crashing of oceanic waves, the scraping of ballet shoes during a rond de jambe mechanical cogs, and distant satellites as heart monitors.

// Training in a range of stage and performance settings: dance, theater, musicals, marching/concert/jazz bands, and site-specific performances, I have a major love for immersive storytelling and reimagining stage magic through collaboration, as a creative and performer myself.

MOVEMENT STATEMENT

Starting my artistic endeavors as a saxophonist and visual artist I am interested in the shared dialogue of an interdisciplinary practice which my movement and art practices conjure. Starting my formal training at the age of twenty-four, my career as a mover has unorthodox yet strong dexterity. Within my movement crafting, I am infatuated with collective human experiences, identity hierarchy, climate change, trauma, and faith in consideration of site-specificity and art installations.
