GARAGE OF PARADISE

For the restaurant and mezcal bar, Disco Tacos of Williamsburg, NY, the mixed media work took aim to embody and articulate the origins of disco, started by BIPOC and queer communities as a safe haven celebration of life, grooves, and moves. Paradise Garage was *the* discotheque of the 1980s, with resident DJ Larry Levan’s center point to the scene. Artistically part of this scene, Keith Haring illustrated an iconic mural lionizing Levan’s and his soundscapes [linked below].

Embodying the phrase “Disco’s not dead.”, honoring disco’s DJ ancestry, working with the passion and inspiration of the Disco Tacos family. I combined disco dreams and catholic iconography with symbols extrapolated for natural wine and mezcal bar with my current love for mixed media painting.

Such an intense process, from learning about the project 2.5 weeks before fabrication, including meetings, brainstorms, to having the production/shopping/creation time only 6 days. SIX DAMN DAYS. Pushing my techniques learned from works past and pressing into new ones, I’m stoked about the final piece and all it’s juicy moments. A melting paper mache disco ball // dripping + pooling geometric disco bits // wood stain disco floor weaving // garment wash play // sacred heart anatomical structures.

….

And now fully addicted to disco.
